Outside in Style owners Karen and Paul Galindo announced they will retire and close their popular casual stores, with locations in Austin and San Antonio.
Galindo’s father, Matt Wiggers, founded the store with his wife Muriel as The Greenhouse Mall in 1977. Wiggers passed away earlier this year. In 1994, the Galindos took over the business following Wiggers’ retirement.
“I’ve been going at it since I was 11 years old, and it scares me to death to leave,” says Karen. “It’s all I’ve ever known, and it gives me a lot of sadness because I love the people in the industry so much. But it’s one of those things that to be able to retire, I have to leave the industry.”
Outside in Style will hold a going out of business sale, starting June 27 at all locations. They will close the doors permanently on October 27.
The Galindos plan to relocate to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they will operate a small boutique called Karina on Canyon, selling jewelry, leather goods and clothing. Karen says she and Paul look forward to a much slower pace in comparison to running multiple popular stores.
“I’ll still be a retailer, but just not in outdoor furniture,” says Karen. “Paul and I are just ready to live a different life.”
While Karen says the change is right for them, it’s still a bittersweet moment.
“We’re going to come back in September to say goodbye to everyone,” she says. “It’s with real heartfelt feeling that we wish everyone the best of luck in the industry. We love everyone, and this move has nothing to do with the industry—it’s just time for us.”
